— ABOUT US
New York African Studies Association
Founded 1973 · Advancing African & Africana Studies Across New York & Beyond
— OUR HISTORY
Five Decades of African Scholarship
NYASA was established as a response to the convergence of events: African independence campaigns and attainments in the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, SUNY System Area Studies Program and internationalization of the curriculum, and the convention of African enthusiasts and ardent Africanists in Syracuse, New York on November 2, 1973.
Today, NYASA has grown into the premier organization for African Studies in New York State, connecting faculty, students, and practitioners at public and private universities, colleges, and high schools.
NYASA partners with global organizations including the United Nations, UNESCO, African Union, CODESRIA, and the Carnegie-Africa Foundation to advance Africanist scholarship in global scientific, educational, and policy agendas.
